Playtime with Smooch and Alex

The video below was edited down from nine minutes of continuous play between Smooch and Alex.
Smooch is unbelievably patient, Alex is incredibly annoying, and I didn't intervene once,
though I was mighty tempted. Tuesday's incident taught me that
I should trust them to work it all out amongst themselves.

  1. of course, they end up on your feet, that is traditional! I saw quite many animals in this patio, even a crocodile!

  2. My goodness!!!! It was painful to watch until I noticed how Smooch's tail keeps wagging, so maybe it doesn't annoy her as much as we might think. That dog has saintly patience!!!!! I had a similar situation once when I adopted a kitten while I had an old cat. My poor old cat was so harassed, I had to urgently adopt another kitten. Then the two played and spent their energy on one another and left my older one in peace. ouf!

  4. Laughing so hard here - so funny! But am feeling Smooch - oh my god the energy! The little sip of water in the middle there. And Smooch finally put Alex in her place, kind of ... just a couple of seconds, and she was up on her feet again. But well done, both Smooch for her patience, and you for letting them go at it. Good friday fun :-)

  5. Girl, you've got a live one on your hands with Miss Alex. Smooch hereafter will be known as Saint Smooch in my book. I'm betting everyone slept pretty good after all that fun.

  7. Was so good to see Smooch turn the tables in the end. Love to see the tail wags. Imagine Smooch will put Alex in her place from time to time. Lisa G in TN

  8. That was wild! I'm feeling tired for Smooch. ;) You've got a little firecracker there, but I did see a bit of submissive behavior from Alex toward the end. So hopefully she will ease up on poor Smooch once in awhile. I'm thinking Alex could keep up with George and Alan! LOL

  10. So much energy! I don't think you have anything to worry about leaving them alone together. They seem to get along well. Alex was definitely showing submissive signs to Smooch, who is proving to be a great mom. I love it, although, I am now worn out after watching that video.

  11. Our ball of energy just turned 8 months old and is finally starting to wind down a bit. Sophie is a (not so) mini Aussie. To channel her energy, we took her for 1 mile walks every day when she was only 8 weeks old, that was great, she learned to follow us off leash (out in the fields). Then she got too fast, so my son used his bicycle. When he had to pedal too fast to actually get her tired, he bought a little electric motorcycle. So now, no matter how late he gets home from work, Sophie still gets a 1-2 mile run every day. Actually, she goes further than that because there is a lot of jumping and boinging up and down and retrieving sticks and balls along the way. Squeaky balls. Oh Lord, why did we only buy toys with squeakers in them?

  12. Smooch will let her know when enough is enough. She is going to learn a lot of lessons from her adult dog mentor. :)

  14. Ha ha I was laughing thru out this. Alex has so much energy but Smooch does have it under control. It WAS like a circus ...Alex putting her paws on top of Smooch’s head, such a booger.
But yes I think this is a good workout for Smooch and will keep her young.

  16. Smooch must have been ready for a nap after the play time was over, probably both of them were very tired.

  17. Wow!! What a good girl, Smooch was! She was so patient and and put Alex gently in the her place instead of pinning her in a way where you'd have had to get in the middle of it.

  19. Puppies often times work wonders in revitalizing an older dog. And, yes, you do need to let them play, and to the point where Smooch will let Alex know when she's had enough . . . a warning growl . . . pinning her to the ground . . . making Alex be submissive to Smooch. It's the older dog's job to "teach" the youngster what is and isn't allowed. I speak from experience . . . having had 6 Irish Setters at one time (used to raise and show Champion Irish Setters for 15 years). It's the way of the "pack" . . . even if it's only 2 in the pack. I would still supervise but you absolutely need to let Smooch reprimand Alex when needed. I never had an adult dog hurt a puppy . . .they know that they're dealing with a young one. She must know that Smooch is to be respected . . . but also can be a wonderful "older sister" too. Enjoy your girls! :-)

  20. I love watching grownup dogs teach young dogs How To Act. Smooch and Alex both are quite fluent in "Dog."
