A place for everything

During the week, I sit at my computer working all damned day.
Lest my bottom get any bigger, I make a concerted effort to get out of my chair
for a few minutes every hour. This usually involves a brisk walk
to the end of the driveway and back. Smooch joins me for these little jaunts,
and we make quick work of it by dashing out the sunroom door,
walking our 365 steps, then returning to do it all over again an hour later.

My jacket, hat and gloves have been cluttering up the sunroom all winter.
Since my dislike for clutter is borderline OCD, I thought it best to devise a solution.

I couldn't find a suitable coat rack to purchase at a reasonable price,
so with a little internet inspiration and railroad spike hooks that I found on Etsy,
I got to work.

I found some reclaimed barn wood in the garage...

...and turned it into a coat rack with a shelf...

...which I stained with white wash.

Ta-da!

No more clutter.

  5. That looks super! You could start a side business selling those - I bet Joanna Gaines would be a customer. :-)

  6. Nicely done! Love the railroad spikes - you could use recycled horse shoes on the next one.

  8. A house we looked at when we wanted to buy was listing to one side, had no proper hot water in the kitchen, and to hang your coats, there was a deer-hoof rack. I'm OCD about clutter too. Nothing better than NO ART on the walls, and shelves with nothing on them. Emptiness, so peaceful.

  13. Does that door swing out??

    1. No, which made sizing and hanging this thing kind of tricky because you know it had to be perfectly centered behind the glass when the door is open. Because OCD.

Yeah, but doesn't the coat rack stick out further than your doorstop? Don't you risk the glass being broken if it accidentally hits the rack? I'm sure it is fine, after all you made it, lol! More importantly, how did you bend the spikes, or did they come that way?

    3. The spikes came with the bend. (I'm strong, but not that strong.) And amazingly, the door glass clears the rack by about a sixteenth of an inch.

  16. You are AMAZING! And like everyone says, you make it all look so easy, too.
I've been in "simple project" hell, trying to age pallet wood (I don't have reclaimed barn wood in MY garage, lol) with black tea and a steel wool/vinegar solution. Your DIY is so satisfying because you get it done so fast - as near as I can tell, from the rate I'm progressing, my lark will be finished in March. 2018.
    Heh.

  17. That is so cool! What kind of saw do you use? Looks like it could be this one? http://www.homedepot.com/p/Makita-15-Amp-7-1-4-in-Circular-Saw-5007F/202873973
I'm toying with getting one but there's also a newish Dremel that does small saw chores. Hmmm.

    1. My saw is a Ryobi - same idea as the Makita. I find that even with a brand new, fully charged lithium battery, the saw eats more power than wood and I end up switching to my dad's electric circular saw mid-way through most projects.
