This is the pie I baked to take to the Pie Town festival on Saturday.
It was a peach/raspberry. I rarely bake pies, and for good reason.
They're a lot of work! Perhaps it is my inexperience, but by the time
then baked the darned thing, cleared the smoke out of the house,
and cleaned the oven, we're talking six hours that I would never get back.
I thought about entering it in the contest,
then I thought about all the work that went into it,
then I thought about it being just another nameless, faceless pie
that the judgmental judges wouldn't appreciate
that the judgmental judges wouldn't appreciate
nearly as much as some other people I know,
so instead of competing with it,
I took my pie to Pie Town and served it to my friends...
I took my pie to Pie Town and served it to my friends...
...some of whom I was meeting in person for the first time.
Hi, Janet! Janet has been a regular reader and commenter on this blog since forever
and came to Pie Town all the way from Arizona.
Hi, Aunt Jean! Another regular reader and commenter since forever,
Jean and her husband drove all the way to Pie Town from Denver.
Never underestimate the lengths people will go to for a piece of pie.
Before we leave this picture, let us not overlook the bearded man in the corner
who appears to making an offering to the pie gods.
Hi, Tom and Kathy and their well-behaved dogs, at the finish line of the PiK.
It was 3.14159 miles.
Tom and Kathy were my neighbors before I moved to the 7MSN,
and they introduced me to the whole Pie Town festival experience in 2010.
Tom and Kathy both placed in their divisions in the PiK race.
Their dogs, having pulled them up the last hill, felt they deserved
their piece of the pie, but Tom wasn't buying it.
I would not have been able to resist this face.
Thorin is a Rhodesian Ridgeback with very large paws.
I had as much fun taking dog pictures at the festival
as I did eating pie.
Pie. Does it give you fear at the start of a recipe? I've made so many, but I always start out nervous. I always use my mom's piecrust recipe. My husband loves it, and will not let me change it...and why would i want to? I love it, too. So why the fear, I ask? Is it because a few mere molecules too much of water will make it too soggy? or that a few seconds too much of mixing will make it tough? With pie, aren't we always chasing the proverbial perfect piecrust? And filling? Your pie, my friend, is a masterpiece! It is a work of art. I can tell it tasted wonderful, too. I love that you took it to the festival to share with your friends. And I love seeing it here. That lattice work is really exceptional. If I had been a judge, you would have won a blue ribbon just for that!!! Well done.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a fun time in pie town.
ReplyDeleteNow I am hungry for pie. It could be what's for breakfast. (Except I don't have any pie...) Will have to make due with a slice of apple cake instead.
Wow!!!! A six-hour pie deserves the blue ribbon all by itself! I'm tempted to hit Pie Town next year, all the way from N.Carolina -- looks like a yummy day! (Not to mention DOGS!)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pie, friends and dogs. It looks like you had a really good day. I hope that pie tasted as good as it looked.
ReplyDeletewhat a pie! would you send it DHL to me? poor dogs! they did not even have their share, how selfish of the owner!
ReplyDeleteUm. That link is to a peach pie recipe. While I am sure that it is good, it is not a peach RASBERRY pie recipe.
ReplyDeleteAlso, to save cleaning the oven afterwards. put a cookie sheet under the pie to catch the boil over juices.
Lastly, if you are not going to enter the pie in a contest, consider a prepackaged refrigerated crust. Pillsbury and Kroger both make very good ones. Stay away from the frozen crusts, they are terrible. But the refrigerated ones are better than the crust I can make from scratch. Now if you are an excellent crust maker, or strive to be, then of course that is cheating. But for me, the pie is more about the filling than the crust.
I had to do something with that recipe to make it my own so I added a layer of raspberries.
DeleteThe 6 hour pie did deserve a blue ribbon! Great day! Aunt Jean
ReplyDeletePie Town! I'd love to go to Pie Town some day too. And I can only dream of ever making a pie as gorgeous as yours. Mine always taste great, but are not so filling to the eyes, with patched, ragged crusts. What a fun event with good friends - perfect day.
ReplyDeleteSo much fun!!!
ReplyDeletePiK...... *snort*
Good call on sharing pie with friends instead of letting judgy judges eat it :-)
Hi! That pie was so good! I think it would have won.
ReplyDeleteThat guy in the corner...OMG! He and his wife were in the fire station arguing about everything. She kept telling him to 'shut up'. Kay and I couldn't stop laughing at them.
BTW..who won?
The one with the little bees on it won the Other category, the blueberry with lavender took second in the Fruit group, but I can't remember who took first. If there was a grand champion, I didn't notice. See what happens when you leave too soon?
DeleteI know.....what can I say? Lol
DeleteDelightful post. Congratuations on baking not only a delicious pie but cooking up wonderful friendships over the past several years!
ReplyDeleteWow! I have to ask 'cause it's been so long since someone has baked me one, but "What's a pie?" :-}
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun time it looks....
ReplyDeleteDogs and pie...two of my most favorite "couldn't live withouts" in life! I think your pie was a beauty, and looked delicious.
ReplyDeleteAw, I'm so happy (and envious) you all got to meet! This is the best part for me! Oh, and the dogs. :-) :-) :-)
ReplyDeleteLooks like such a fun day. And meeting your blog friends for the first time was the best!
ReplyDeleteThe pie looked yummy ( I need ice cream) and the dogs were adorable. I'll put it on my bucket list.
It's a winner of a day :-D.
ReplyDeleteDarn that pie looks good! Are there secrets to traveling that far and keeping a pie fresh (crunchy crust...no soggy bottom)? Please don't say "drive fast." What a great day it must have been. Pie Townians probably have fun planning for it each year.
ReplyDeletePie transportation is tricky. I wasn't as worried about the crust getting soggy as much as I was the whole thing crashing down on my bumpy road. I protected this one in a big picnic basket, buckled into the front seat.
DeleteOoooo, your pie looks soooo delicious!!
ReplyDeleteI think you made the right decision in giving it to your friends instead of entering it in the contest!!
It looks like you had a most wonderful day!!
PS - I was concerned about the pie god guy, too. Hee hee!
What fun! I lived outside of Gallup for a while and never heard of Pie Town (no surprise there-lol) ~ I'll have to put it on my calendar for next year. Now... must make a pie :-)
