Return of the ottoman empire

Back in July, I turned a drawer into an ottoman, and it was generally a success
except for the part where it was supposed to slide under the chair
and be hidden away when not in use. My original measurements
failed to account for the chair springs, which were about
an inch lower than the front of the chair. Oh well.

Then reader Solveig came to the rescue and emailed me the idea to move the brace
into which I had screwed the casters from the underside of the drawer to the inside.

 Genius.
I swear, if I didn't share my problems on this blog,
I'd still have them.

While I was making the caster adjustment, I took Home Depot man's advice and added
a chain to prevent the lid from flopping back and breaking the hinge.
But since I couldn't find a scrap piece of chain, I used a gold necklace
from the stash of gold jewelry I no longer wear but was keeping
to sell in the event I should one day find myself
desperate for cash and didn't want to sell my plasma.

The necklace adds just the right touch of bling, if I do say so myself.
And had I not been in the middle of my whole house purge project,
I would have never found the jewelry stash. I'm on a recycling roll.

Smooch: This would make a good toy box.

  1. Very impressive repurposing all around! And I wonder, since there's so little in the ottoman (IS that yarn in the bowl? It looks a little odd to me.), have you crocheted up ALL that yarn?

    1. Yes, I have crocheted up all that yarn, and this pillow is taking forever because I know it's my last until I order more, which I think I'll do right now. Thanks for the nudge!

  2. When you talk, you are only repeating what you already know; but when you listen, you may learn something new.

Yes Smooch, I agree, that would make a nice toy box. Nice to see that there are some advantages to sharing your life on a blog, btw, my project has been put off until winter :) Love the chain, I would never have thought of that!

  5. A gold necklace on the ottoman -- I just love that! I was glad to see the stuff in the box is yarn; whew! It looked like roast beef. Who knows that you wouldn't have thought of something ingenious to do with it!
