I've been keeping a very close watch on the eggs in the nest in the cholla,
raising the suspicions of Lucy, George and Alan...
...who can't seem to grasp why I take a picture
of the same cactus multiple times a day.
I don't want to miss anything.

Chicks 1 and 2 hatched just before dawn Friday morning.
A few hours later, the balls of fluff had rearranged themselves
and I could see a beak.
By noon, Chick #3 had hatched and all of them were screaming for food.
Their parents have been very accommodating
and don't seem to mind my intrusion around the nursery.
I frequently spot them drinking water from the chicken's tub,
so I'm thinking they know a good thing when they see it.
Such demanding babies! Love the photos of babies and the last one. They know they are safe there <3
ReplyDeleteBe glad they are mocking birds or bluejays (eastern) .... my mother use to wear my brother's play-football helmet to the clothes line when we were kids. She didn't even know where the nest was, but being in the back yard near the tree-line was enough to start the bird's dive bombing behavior. I've been bombed by the mocking birds in the past few years.
ReplyDeleteLove the pictures. The babies should soon imprint on the parents and they may stop reacting to you and the camera. I check on the blue bird nest and the babies will call to me for the 1st day, and then they will hunker down like I'm a predator (even if I chirp to them).
Can't wait to see them fledge. Getting out of that nest might be a bit tricky!

oops -- 'be glad they ARE NOT mocking birds

That's neat, can't wait to see them leave the nest. Surely, they'll hang around long enough for a photo op.
ReplyDeleteso cute! you are a nature reporter now!
ReplyDeleteYou need a trail cam. We could have watched them hatch.
ReplyDeleteEverything looks so green there. We need rain.
You got them on hatch day! Bravo! I have stalked numerous bird nest pre- and post-hatching over the years and seeing new life up close and personal like this is so much fun. Great photos!
ReplyDeleteNest full of open mouths, that's what baby birds are :) Love the pics. We had a robin's nest on windowsill two years ago (not really a good spot). Both humans and cats enjoyed the show while it lasted.
ReplyDeleteMother Nature at her finest. Looking forward to watching the chicks grow and fledge.
ReplyDeleteWow, those are some great shots of those babies!
ReplyDeleteOooo, the chicks hatched!!! How exciting!!!
ReplyDeleteI missed so much in a couple of days...catching up now! hee hee!
Love that foto where the little birds are screaming for food :) We have a bird house right next to our kitchen window on a bichtree. Just waiting to see little ones paiping out there.
