The blog loses its biggest fan

My Dad died yesterday, the day before his 87th birthday. He was this blog's biggest fan.
He and Mom would sit at his computer every morning, and he would read my commentary –
and every one of your comments – to my Mom (whose vision isn't what it used to be).
Every Thursday during our weekly phone call, we'd rehash the posts from the previous week.
Dad particularly loved the do-it-myself-fix-it posts. It goes without saying that he taught me
everything I know about fixing stuff, plus a million or so other things that made me who I am today.

The last time I was with my Dad was a year ago. I'm so very grateful for the happy times we shared that trip
His health went south the same time mine did in late August, and I wasn't able to travel to Florida to say good-bye in person.

This photo was taken a week ago. I was there in spirit.

I'm going to take a break from blogging this week – don't be alarmed.
I'll be back when the time is right and I can focus.
For now, I've got some reminiscing to do.

Happy birthday, Dad. I know you'll find a way to read this somehow.

  15. Every time I hear the lap, lap of the waves on a shore, I think of my dad. He gave up the fight in 2009. We set his ashes free the next year on the shore where he swam as a kid. I see him in everything. I only cry every once in a while.

He is 1/3 the reason I am who I am. My mom is another 1/3. The other 1/3 grew up like a weed between two blocks of cement. No one know how, it's just there. You are an amazing spirit. You are the living part of him.

  19. I am so very sorry about your dad. One of my favorite photos of all time is the one with you all on that family trip. I saved it on my iPad and whenever I need a laugh, I look at it. He reminds me of my father, who also taught me how to do things myself. Happy Birthday to your dad from one of his fans.

You have my deepest sympathy and prayer. We girls have a special relationship with our Dads - they are the standard that all other men struggle to live up to! He looks like he was a real pistol, I love his funny T-shirts, and clearly your sense of humor is part of his gift to you (besides your awesome fix-it skills!). My Dad passed in 2004, and I'm still not "over it", but I did learn to "live with it". No one is ever gone, as long as we remember them. My prayers to you and your family.

  149. My daddy always told me I could do anything I wanted to do, like change the oil in my car, check the tires, build a chicken coup. He'd laugh at my mistakes but told me to always 'climb back up on the horse and try again'. That attitude in some way got me through his passing and the care of my moma afterwards. My daddy wore the exact same kind of eyeglasses as your dad wore, and it's little memories/heart murmurs like these that will come to you with a smile later on. Your mom has lost her lifelong best friend, so she and your entire family will be in my prayers. There's now another bright star shining in the desert sky... ~Pam in Louisiana~

  168. I was so sorry to read about your father - I know how hard it is to lose someone when you can't be with them at the end, the same thing happened with my father.

But he's with you still, of course, particularly when you're fixing things. That's his lasting gift - that and his love.

  179. Love lives forever and I know your dad loved you and the rest of his family. It was shown in his actions and in the photos you've shared with us. I love his tee shirts; they show his sense of humor which you've inherited. Even if he didn't buy those shirts, he wore them with pride and a smile. May remembering those fun times, his smiles and his love help you and your family through this sad time. We're sending our prayers and hugs.
