Johnny comes lately...

...at about 4:00 every afternoon.

He squeezes through the pickets on the porch...

...and stands at my office door, staring at me until I let him in.

For as eager as Johnny can be for me to open the door, he's still a bit timid about crossing the threshold.

I've been known to pick him up and carry him inside.

Eventually, he'll prowl around from room to room to confirm Smooch isn't in the house.

Johnny: If you left that damned dog in the backyard permanently, I wouldn't be afraid to come in here.
Me: Not gonna happen. You two will just have to learn to get along.

Are all cats this tall when they stand on their hind legs?
Johnny could probably open that door himself if he stretched a little further.

Johnny: No mice in here. Gotta go. Let me out.

  1. We all have to get used to thing a little at a time. Hey, you look pretty good, too, Post-Surgical-Fully-Recovered-Colic Patient!

  5. Linda, we keep our male cats outdoors. They stay on the front porch and one naps daily in the garage. Years ago I learned that male cats and couches don't mix...sigh...the HARD WAY! One sprayed on our couch and that was it! Banished FOREVER! Johnny Cat, however, is so darn cute!

  11. Lordy! I agree w/you. If he'd just stretch out his right paw, he'd have it licked... he could open the door! Sweet.

  12. My orange-man tries to open doors all the time. If we had a lever-type "knob" like yours, I'm sure he would succeed. Your Johnny sure is handsome.

  13. Looks like he is patrolling his territory for unwanted critters. What a great cat!

  14. He's gorgeous. But I'm sorta partial to cats of the ginger and marmalade persuasion.
Saw a History Channel episode last week that talked about the origins of the housecat. When wild became domesticated. They went looking all over the world (ended up in Egypt) for the cats that had the least diversity of genes and would be the most closely related to the wild.....yep it's orange ones. I don't know why, they seemed to think that they are the closest to being wild ones, but JCC has a long line of "being on the brink of crossing the threshold" genetically.

  15. I think all orange cats are this tall.
Factoid---all orange cats are male. Occasionally there'll be a female, but it's a genetic rarity.

  17. He's such a beauty and so much personality. I remember bringing supposedly feral cats into our home a few times and it does take a bit of getting used to but they eventually do it. We have indoor-outdoor cats and it works but ours have to be in at night as it's when things around here roam in search of snacks... like cats.

  18. Thanks for making my day, right from the start. That golden boy is a keeper. You can just tell how sweet he is. Love the pic of you holding him. Great to see you looking so well. Becky

  19. That 2nd pic of JCC staring at you through the door makes him look like a little cougar wanting to come inside! LOL I think all cats look long & lean when they stretch upward like that.
So glad you are letting him both inside the house and inside your heart ... :o)

  27. I have a very thin, very long orange cat. Almost a twin to Johnny. My cat has extra toes on all four paws. He can stand on his back ones and looks like a kangaroo. He almost reaches the counter. So, yes some cats are very long. Might be an orange boy thing. Just saying ...

  29. I love cats and this post just made my day. He is a keeper and someone was looking out for you the day he came home. The last photos is fantastic. Melting my heart.

  30. I'm so glad he's asking to come in. As the weather gets colder, I think he'll stay inside with you a lot longer. :) Love the selfie of you with Johnny. That last photo shows off his beautiful eyes!

  31. Oh, have to weigh in on the "all orange cats are male" theory .. NADA! My first cats were siblings; sister and brother; both orange tabbies. I've met several female orange tabbies since, but they're not as common as males, however, they're ALL very nice cats!

Johnny is a bit long for a cat, but it just adds to his charm. He's quite the character -- he fits in perfectly with the rest of your menagerie! Lucky you :)

  32. What do Lucy and Johnny CashCat have in common? Their "Anticipation Ears"! I've always loved how Lucy positions her ears at "a quarter to three"/9 and 3, or 10 and 2, when she walks toward you to receive some loving (except when a burro is nearby and she gets jealous and pins her ears way back). Looks to me like Johnny's ears communicate that same feeling of happy anticipation (cf., 10 to 2 position in photos 2 & 3). :)

  33. Well, clearly if the NBA ever recruits cats, there's one in NM that fits the bill.

Looking good Carson. You heal up good. Must be the magic honey.
