The chickens lose their porch privileges

It was Tuesday morning around ten o'clock. As usual, I was in my office, working my way through all of the jobs
due by the end of the day. There was a loud knock peck at the office door. It was Eugenia.

Eugenia: Look what I brought you, mom!
Me: Are you freakin' kidding me?? You know I'll have to stop what I'm doing, get the camera,
and take pictures for the folks at home. They will be totally grossed out, and it will be all your fault.
Eugenia: So be it. I'm tired of those damned donkeys getting all the attention.

Smooch: Mom, Eugenia is playing with a dead mouse.
Me: I'm well aware of that. Please stop pressing your nose against the glass. It's dirty enough.

Minnie saw how much fun Eugenia was having and wanted a piece of the action...literally.

So did Clara.

Me: Can't you girls find someplace else to play?

Eugenia: The expansion seam in the concrete makes a good goal line – helps us keep score.

Eugenia: Whoo-hoo! Another point for me!

Me: How can I get any work done with you two playing mouseball on the porch?

Me: Take that thing into the outfield and don't come back.

Me: Your porch privileges are officially suspended.

  4. We play Mouse Ball here, too. The Ladies Who Lay couldn't figure out how to open it so they flipped it around vehemently. After the video was shot, I hucked it out into the woods. I didn't know WHY the mouse was dead. People around here put out poison.

The ladies stepped it up knowing there is a barn kittie to compete for camera time! LOL

  8. Mouse Ball t-shirts need to be made and sold to your fans. Folks can have the choice of Team Blue Eyes or Team Eugenia!

  9. Chickens are so selfish. It's always about them, isn't it?
Glad your girls are taking care of things til the barn kitty is on the job.

  10. Ha ha. I bet they just jump over from now on.

Did a chicken catch the mouse, or did the kitty do it?

  11. So what's their excuse for allowing the packrats to move in right under their nos...er, beaks?

  12. Oh those chickens. I haven't laughed that hard in a long time. Mouseball? Ewww but funny. I think the chickens have it in mind not to be outdone by any new interloper with blue eyes. You know how they obey those pecking orders.....tee hee.

  14. Oh Carson, this is too funny. Eugenia is one special chicken. I can see why you have a hard time getting your work done... between mouseball and all the remedial work you do. ;)

  17. Oooh, what a fun game - go, Eugenia!!
I find their choice of location a perfect one, as your photos highlight very well those beautifully stained porch rails.

  18. i've had a little trouble thinking about chickens and eggs since I learn they eat tarantulas. I bet Eugenia goes after those big spiders with real zest!

  20. Hehe! I love watching my girls when they try to play keep away with each other. Too funny. Mine play with frogs, moles, voles, mice and snakes. They are pretty good little "hunters."

  21. Oh, too funny!!! Enjoyed seeing their little game. Don't you know all the pets bring their, umm, 'toys' to the front door for you to see?! Mine do! I found a dead packrat in the henyard a while back...THEY killed it!! My kitties are too lazy to go after rats here.

Thanks for the tummy tickle! Blessings!

  23. Our chickens lost their porch privileges when we found them enjoying the view from the porch swing.

I am a long time reader and now first time commenter, and I must tell you how much I enjoy my visits to the ranch! Your photos, your wicked sense of humour, and most of all the joy of sharing life with beloved animals that shines through every word you write - thank you!

  25. My chooks (as we call them down here in Oz) are the best mousers on the place! They are so fast and predatory, the mouse hasn't got a chance. Tiny dinosaurs they indeed are!

  26. Is Eugenia a Delaware? I was looking into getting some chicks of that breed.

  27. I think the NY Times will be calling you about the conditions in Abu Gharib 7 miles South of Nowhere. Also, it appears there is a Killer Cat in the neighborhood, too.
