Thinking that two feral cats is better than one (because maybe they'll hang out with each other and stay closer to the barn
instead of wandering off into the far reaches of the pasture with the herd like some other barn cat we knew and loved),
I rendezvoused with the adopt-a-barn-cat lady yesterday and picked up this guy:
Barn Cat #2: Please tell me I'll never have to ride in this crate along that bumpy road again. My teeth are still rattling.
He's 3 years old. The shelter deemed him too wild to be adopted and turned him over to the barn cat program.
Smooch caught wind of him the moment I took him out of the truck, and she's not thrilled about his arrival.
With any luck, Barn Cats #1 and #2 will stay out of Smooch's yard, as Deets did, and we'll all live in peaceful harmony.
I'm certain that neither barn cat has ever crossed paths with a horse or a donkey, but that's no big deal.
I think all animals are born knowing how to get along with each other.
Deets had never known horses or donkeys until he arrived here, and he was riding them bareback before he left.
This is the first good look I got of him, as he exited his crate in the feed room. He's a long drink of water.
He sniffed around for a few minutes, checking out the litter box and eyeing the food dishes atop the feed bin.
I'm sure he knew another cat was in the room, he just didn't know where. The barn cat lady wasn't a bit worried
about the two of them getting along, saying the female "was mean and could take care of herself."
I hope he realizes that sooner than later. He's been here 10 hours as I write this post, and I haven't heard any yowling
coming from the feed room yet. I'm sure they're saving that up until the wee hours of the morning.
Anyway, when last I saw Barn Cat #2, he was headed for a hiding place behind the hay bales.
By the next time I see him, maybe I'll have thought up a proper name. This #1 and #2 stuff is getting old.
he truly is a long drink of water and also beautiful. love his color
ReplyDeleteHope it all works out for everyone with the new cat. He looks able to take care of himself like blue eyes does. Good luck and I'm sure you'll come up with some great names.
ReplyDeleteHide for now kitty, but you will be a part of the 7MSN in no time.
ReplyDeleteHe reminds me a lot of our Rusty - long and lean and ginger. Enjoy being a barn cat, Rusty!
ReplyDeleteWelcome GINGER! he is long and thin. Cross my fingers SAPHIR (as I call her) and him make friends.
ReplyDelete#1 cat should be "Franki" -- she has Sinatra eyes. #2 cat - maybe "Sheldon"? He makes me think of Sheldon Cooper -- heaven help us!
ReplyDeleteI read your blog every day - thanks for sharing the 7MSN with us through your beautiful pictures and entertaining writing.
ReplyDeleteAs far as the cats' names, what about Johnny and June, to go along with your old time country singer naming theme?
We just watched The Life of Pi last night. I think Big Yellow's real name is Richard Parker. :-)
ReplyDeleteGosh, darn, Carson! I missed your other posts about the barn cats. Between parent conferences and a new grandchild (a girl)...I've been "lost" for a few days or weeks? Congrats on your two barn cats. I adopted a blue-eyed white male cat about 16 years ago. Our son named him "Loki", who is the Norwegian god of mischief and he sure has lived up to his name. Has he ever caught a creature in his life? Uh...two birds, I think...and one of them got loose! He is worthless as a hunter. THAT was my little female, Daisy, who recently died of old age. She caught EVERYTHING...birds, baby bunnies, a baby hummingbird, lizards...you name it..she caught it!
ReplyDeleteOh goodness but he is a good looking beast. He looks just like my Sunny Bunny Boo Boo Head. Only your mouser has a tail and Sunny has none. Yep this one looks big enough to take on the pack rats for sure.
ReplyDeleteYou made me think of Dr. Seuss...thing one and thing two.
Happy Sunday, Oma Linda
At least he looks the part of a barn cat! Unlike the princess blue eyes...
ReplyDeleteHey there's always Blake and Miranda, staying in the super star country singer vein.
ReplyDeleteI don't know...I kind of like Thing 1 and Thing 2! =o)
ReplyDeleteI love your "country" name theme. How about Loretta and Conway or maybe Faith and Tim?? I like Johnny and June too! So many good country names, old and new. Hope they stick around for a very long time! :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking that there's some role reversal going on here: YOU are the Cat in the Hat, and barn kitties are Thing 1 and Thing 2...
ReplyDeleteHe is a long drink of water similar to our Tigger who weighs 20 pounds and is also lean and long. I hope you figure out names for Blue and Orange.
ReplyDeleteFor some reason I started thinking Hole in the Wall gang. Cat door in the feed room inspired?
ReplyDeleteI suspect they will get along together without problems.
He looks fierce! Watch out mice!
ReplyDeleteI like Bailey's suggestion for names :-)
I tghink every home should have a ginger cat!
ReplyDeleteToms I have owned in the past were Jasper & Kipper (He came pre-named!)
I look forward to loads more pics
I have an orange boy who looks almost like yours, his name is Riley Andrew.
ReplyDeleteYour pretty girl could be called Sabrina or Meredith.
Better come up with a name soon or they may end up Thing 1 and Thing 2.:)
ReplyDeleteWelcome Cat #2. I hope you and Cat #1 are soon good friends and feast well on mice and packrats - or at least scare them away from the barn. Looking forward to hearing what you decide to be called.
ReplyDeleteI sense a book deal......your ranch is so much fun to visit. My daily dose just isn't enough. Thank you for entertaining us and being companionate about animals, and blogging:)
ReplyDeleteI think you should name them Clint and Sara (Two mules for sister sara).
ReplyDeleteThere's a '70s song running around my head (with a few lyric changes): "I live in the desert with two cats with no names" :-) Now, (you DO know the song, right?!), you haven't been in the desert on a "Horse with no name" (thanks, Hank) so I do believe it's important to find names for these beautiful hard-working felines, and that they not become part of the "cats with no names" lyric.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Linda, for giving them a home. Our hearts are with you as you accept them into the 7MSN life.
He looks likes the stitching in a favorite pair of jeans... Levi. I could so love this cat.
ReplyDeleteI love to see the tremendous interest your following showed about the 2 cats... Record numbers for Princess blue eyes and honorable mention for Mister red... Do we love cats so much? Are we just excited about new 7MSN interlocutors? Does the "barn cat" status thug at our heartstrings? I'm not sure. But i am hungry for kitties posts. And i'm praying they will get along for it would break my heart to have them fighting.
ReplyDeleteI almost missed this post with my busy life, too!
ReplyDeleteDon't you have a favorite western that you could pull two barn kitty names out of?
Well, for now, Thing 1 and Thing 2 don't realize how lucky they were to land at the 7MSN. Looking foward to more blog posts as the two of them (and you) get all adjusted to each other. :)
Name him Cheddar!!! :)
ReplyDeleteI had to go back and re-read the post about the barn cats' first arrival....somehow I missed that the second of the first two did not stay.....and I imagined he would eventually join you and Smooch in the house! Best of luck with the newbie.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure if this has been suggested yet or not, but what about Marmalade?
ReplyDeleteHe is really beautiful! Both of them are...
ReplyDeleteI think it's a good idea to stick with the country
names...there are alot good ideas on here, though
Good luck!
i kind of like that idea of Deb's...Loretta and Conway. He really looks like a Conway, and for the life of me i don't know why, it just fits from the pic. Hope it all works out.
ReplyDeleteHe's pretty! Orange tabbies are my favorite. I'm sure he'll be best friends with your other barn cat in no time.
ReplyDeleteOh, he's lovely. And, incredibly lanky. How about Luke for a name (Cool Hand Luke). He may just be the right kind of sweet talker our little Miss needs to coax her out from behind the hay bales.
