Lucy starts off the year on the wrong foot

Apparently Lucy partied a little too hard while ringing in the new year. About a week ago, she came up lame on her right front leg. She's much better now (i.e., my stomach isn't in as many knots as it was last week), but she's still confined to a 12' x 24' pen and is under vet's orders to stay there for another five days or so. If she isn't 100% by Friday, I'll haul her to town for an exam.

She injured the tendon and/or annular ligament just above her right front fetlock. I clipped most of the hair off the area and am applying Surpass to it twice daily. She's no longer limping, but I'm still feeling some heat in the area. With enough rest and no shenanigans, I'm sure she'll be good as new in no time. I've been taking her out of her pen for short walks. The first thing she does when we get in the corral is find a great big patch of soft dirt and roll. As long as she can have a good roll a few times a day, she seems to be handling her confinement with relative ease.

The boys are taking Lucy's convalescence harder than she is. They're stuck in the corral
and small pasture near the barn for now so that Lucy doesn't lose sight of them and get upset.

Lucy was walking well enough yesterday morning to go a little further than usual.
This was the most excitement the boys had seen all week.

Hank got all riled up and scared the bejesus out of George, who wasn't sure what was coming up behind him.

George: It might be a freight train or it might be Hank. I'm not going to waste time turning around to look.

Hank put on a show the likes of which I haven't seen in a long time.
And I got enough pictures to fill this blog for at least a couple more days.

    Best always,

  3. Hope it's nothing too serious for Lucy. Colt seems to always be accident prone in the spring (crossing my fingers this year) and Pierce is on the mend from going through a fence...

  8. Here's hoping Ms. Lucy is 100% well soonest. I hadn't really thought of how much freedom or the lack thereof would have on your furbabies. But because they have so much acreage to run and covort in, the loss of it would have a big effect on all. Hank is so beautiful running. And George is so smart. Hope Lucy gets better so you can hold back on the worry. Oma Linda

  9. It's always something isn't it? I hope Lucy is feeling better soon. You might want to look into some slow feed hay nets to help alleviate boredom. They have worked wonders for Ramsey and Emma. They are also a good diet aid for the easy keepers like George. Good luck.

  10. Funny how upsetting the normal routine sends the whole herd into a funk. I hope Lucy mends quickly!

  11. Looks like Hank has an early case of Spring Fever. Poor Lucy. That swelling looks nasty. I'm sure Wynonna will be able to share a few tips on how to put her feet up and relax.

  14. Get well soon Little Lucy. And Hank, you be careful running full speed out there. Carson already has one in sickbay and doesn't need two.

  20. Get a bottle of SORE NO MORE. Star came up gimpy early fall. I let her go for like 4 days....got no worse. got no better. I pulled out the big guns...SORE NO MORE! by the second day, she was not gimpy as bad. By the fourth day, she was walking just fine. Oh, and you can even use it on yourself for aches and pains. WORKS AWESOME! Just generally and liberally rub it on. It is all herbal, and I don't know why it works, but it does. It is for general aches and pains. If it is a much more serious thing, then of course it won't help, and a doc should be called in. But while waiting, you could give it a try.
