The art of doing nothing

I'm not very good at doing nothing. The idea of sitting around idle is not appealing.
Typically when I'm doing nothing, like standing around in the pasture with the herd,
I'm doing a few other things, like kicking cactus or taking pictures or degoobering ears.

Anyway, there have been a few times this summer when I've really felt like doing absolutely nothing,
but I didn't have the right equipment.

Now I do.

Yesterday, I hung my new hammock in a stall and laid around doing nothing for two hours.
Sure, I was drinking a beer and listening to a book and gazing out at the herd in the pasture,
but that still counts as nothing because I was reclining at the time.

My nothing time ended when the herd came home for supper.

Hank ran back and forth behind the barn way too many times...

...convinced that I was a lion sleeping in a tree about to pounce on him.

Alan, Lucy and George were skeptical but much less alarmed.

George finally came in for a visit. I told him it would be nice if he waited on me for a change–
feed me grapes, fan the air with palm fronds, refresh my drink.

He offered to fluff up my pillow,

but that didn't go too well.

In the end, my doing nothing included giving butt scratches, but it was still a lovely way to spend the afternoon.

  1. Guess the joke was on Hank -- Mom hangs an extra large hay-net in the barn and then decides to take a nap in it (Hattaras Hammock?)

  2. Funny how sensitive they are to something that's out of the ordinary...those survival instincts are still in good working order ;-)

  3. At least George didn't dunk your pillow in the water trough! :)

  4. I have heard that giving butt scratchings to donkeys is very theraputic eh!! I think the whole world needs to do a little more nothing on a sunny sunday afternoon!!

  5. What a great post. Your critters are like having kids around, mom never gets to truly relax. I, too, find it hard to "relax" and I think it's because I'm a little OCD. I found my hammock to be pretty relaxing but I really don't do the nap thing. My hot tub is my place for relaxing, particularly at night looking up at the starry sky. And with it being so cold outside of the water now, I find I don't jump up to do other things.

  7. First off, I have to say what a handsome fellow Hank is. Secondly, I envy you the hammock because a hammock is indeed the perfect excuse to simply enjoy the day. And sometimes one has to do just that.

  8. Glad you gave yourself permission to take it easy.
I was wondering how the herd was going to react to a hammock in the barn---you answered that. :)

Ever wonder why horses are so much more 'spooky' than donkeys? I do.

  9. Poor Hank, something was lurking to frighten him....as it should be in October. Bwahahahahha.
You herd is so adorable about discovery, and new things. Glad you hung that contraptiona and enjoyed some active down time. Looks like fun.

  10. I always feel so guilty doing nothing...because there is always so much to do. Why is that? It's not as if the 'to do' list is going to go away, and it's not as if I won't eventually get those things done...but sitting down for one minute causes me to feel guilty. I guess that's a universal problem. Glad you have a 'nest' to relax in. Looks very comfy. Maybe I need a hammock...

  13. I really need to take notes on this one. About as close as I ever get is sitting on my mounting block, listening to an audiobook and petting my dog for fifteen minutes. Maybe I need a hammock.

  15. So many times I've said...this is a perfect day for a hammock. The herd's reaction is so interesting. Hank's warning and the donkey's slow study. That stinker George...bringing you back to reality.

  20. I love that you put the hammock in the barn! I giggle at Hank's reaction only because I know my Wiley would do the same. Of course it takes one of the burro boys to be 1st to come in. Too funny on the fluffing of the pillow.
