A breed apart

There's no getting around it. My chickens are weird.




Now their favorite pastime is playing with mice. Where will it end?


Eat or be eaten, survival of the fittest, call it what you will.


I'm keeping Smooch in the back yard far away from them, just in case.

    Those pictures reminded me of Henny Penny. They're cute little chix even though a bit weird. I guess we all have a weird side.

    These guys are definitely a breed all their own. They certainly are entertaining though...unless you're a mouse, poor thing.

    Sigh. Since finding your blog, I don't find chicken (or any chicken by-product) to be all that ... appetizing ... anymore. ;p

    Wow, you do have some different chickens! What I want to know is, did they actually EAT the mouse, or just run around passing it from chicken to chicken?

    HEY! My chickens play Flip-the-Mouse-Tag, too!

    I have video of them flipping it around until everyone had a turn. They did not, however, figure out how to open it. I tossed it into the woods because I didn't know how the mouse died. We have neighbors who like poison...

    Birds are very predatory! LOL
    Even chickens. The Tarantula! yikes! LOL At least they will keep the vermin down!! LOL

    We used to have chickens. My brothers were going to be the chicken kings of PA. They lost interest after a month. I don't remember them ever chasing mice. I was about 7 or 8. Even the dog wouldn't eat the chickens after they were killed and cooked.

    I watched one of our chickens swallow a dead mouse whole. Obviously it was a tiny mouse, but I did hold my breath for a few seconds, wondering if it was going to get stuck before it got all the way down.

    And it's Eugenia for the touchdown!! (Minnie and Eugenia totally looked to me like they were playing a speedy and elaborate game of football) :-)

    Boy, those girls don't fool around. I saw this game firsthand. And they work up an appetite playing it. Ick.

    Yes, I too want to know if they ATE the thing after they'd finished playing with it.
    Gee.
    Did you ever taste anything . . . funny . . . in the eggs after the tarantula-eating incident? A little extra peppery taste or anything...?

    I'm checking into chickens... eggs is a by product.... I want the chickens to kill the mice in the hay for the horses!

    We keep adopting Barn cats, but lose them to the owls or coyotes... if the chickens are loose during the day, killing the mice, and locked up at night in their cage.... hummmmm. Gotta get me a couple of chickens!!

    This is exactly why having ostriches has never appealed to me. This is totally normal chicken behavior. Doesn't it make you glad that they are not six feet tall? Chickens WILL eat anything!

    It's tough at the bottom of the food chain where even a chicken can get ya.

    Somehow this makes me feel less guilty for being a carnivore.
