I think they are discussing the fact that a certain unnamed member of the crew was at one time going to be abolished (so to speak) and now adorns the header..........uh oh !! :)
Personally, I don't think Alan is stuck in the middle at all. I think he's the negotiator, coaching - under his breath - to each of the opponents on the best thing to say so the impasse will pass as quickly as possible. :-)
Alan has agreed to disagree with both parties.
