Time to eat ... again

I took these pictures last evening, when I went out to feed everybody their dinner.

I realize they don't look too excited about the prospect of food – they were too busy concentrating on not slipping in the mud.

Georgie asked yesterday how often I put feed out for the gang. Typically during the winter I serve them grass hay four times a day –
breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a bedtime snack. Digesting the hay generates heat within their bodies and helps them stay warm.
We're going through about 70 pounds of hay per day right now – that's about one and a quarter bales.
Hank eats more than his share, as it should be. He needs the extra calories to dance around the pasture and levitate.

During the summer, if there's enough pasture grass to keep them busy, I don't feed them any hay at all.
We're all looking forward to the return of those days.

  3. Because I don't have the luxury of working from home (I'd like to know how to get THAT gig!) my herd only gets fed twice a day. I've used various prototypes of slow feeders, though, to spread it out. Hope to have a post up this weekend on my hockey net version that I got put together last month.

  4. Three squares and a bedtime snack - I think I'd like to live at the 7MSN. Everyone looks well fed and happy and warm. Like EvenSong, I'm using slow feeders for AM and PM feedings around my work schedule.

  6. Well, it looks like the sunshine has returned, at least. That levitation trick was pretty special...*smile*

  7. One of the things I enjoyed about the book Secretariat was the amount of food he ate. Prodigious. Hank understands :) Happy herd you have there at 7MSN.
