The best 10 minutes of Smooch's life, edited for television

Ice cream treats for dogs – who knew? Premier commenter Pat from East Tennessee told me about Frosty Paws awhile ago, but I was unable to find it in my rural Walmart until recently. It's made by Purina, who is clearly cashing in on the nothing-but-the-best-for-our-animals demographic...because what other knuckleheads would spend #%*@! $3.70 on a package of four 3.5 ounce frozen treats for our dogs? As another Frosty Paws mom complained to me, "It costs the same as a half gallon of ice cream!" Hi, Justina!

I was just about to take a vow of poverty so that my dog could regularly enjoy her new favorite treat when Pat sent me a link to a homemade Frosty Paws recipe. I'll be whipping up a batch in the test kitchen tonight, for Smooch to review later in the week. Will she give it two paws up? Let's hope so.

  1. Cute, cute, cute video!!!

Being as I had just mortgaged the farm so Wally could have another 4-pack of Frosty Paws (I did this a day or two before coming across that recipe), I'm anxious to see what Smooch thinks of the homemade version. SO thankful you and Justina agree Frosty Paws is a pricey treat.

I didn't let Wally see Smooch's video as he only gets 1/3 of a cup at a time .. don't want him calling "doggie social services" and complaining of doggie abuse! HA!

  2. Looks like it's a big hit with Smooch! A little pricey but she's worth it. Poor Wynona, maybe when you whip up a batch you can give one to her and label it Frozen Snouts.

  3. I love this. It started my day with a smile. And the music made. I had heard the phrase scream for ice cream.
Also I had been wanting to try to get the softness of color like you have with Smooch's pictures and didn't realize that some of it was actually her (I think Smooch is a her?) color. Such a sweet happy dog.

  4. I have to admit, when my dog Lily used to have them I took the ice cream out of the cup and put it in a bowl so it would be easier for her to eat. Then she'd throw up. lol!

I'll have a look at that recipe! A girl needs a little spoiling now and then, right Smooch?

  5. Oh, what a happy dog! Can't wait to hear about the recipe later on. Perhaps Wynonna will get to test it, too? (At least she's hoping she can...)

  6. I wonder how many veterinarians are removing the plastic containers from dog's stomachs or intestinal tracts.
Cute video of Ms. Smooch. $3.70? so worth every penny. We love our dogs!

  7. Perfect music - beautiful video (you did such a good job with it, it looks like you had an entire camera crew there). Smooch looks like she's in heaven on earth and with such mucho gusto! We can't wait to see Smooch's review on Pat's recipe! Loved Grey Horse Matters's recommendation for Frozen Snouts. A second perfect way to start the day!

  9. Oh that is soooo great! I will have to get some for my boys too. I'll be interested to see if Smooch likes the homemade version as much as this.

  10. You can try to make your own Frosty Paws. But remember you'll have to put the Crack Cocaine in it. Because it's totally addictive for dogs. We give it to the terriers only as extra special treats. But it takes a month of detox after they get one.

  12. What a great video. We give our dogs real vanilla ice cream and when we go to the freezer at night they go crazy. They enjoy their treat while we have ours. I can't wait to see the homemade doggie version but I bet it is the same as what is in real vanilla.

  15. She looks pretty focussed! I'll bet Wynnona would enjoy a little frozen milk treat too. I'm also betting that the homemade version will be even better.

  16. Thanks for the video. It really put a smile on my face.

I love how Smooch grabbed the empty cup and took it off to her corner to treasure...

  17. I agree....Wynonna looked so left out. I could just hear her saying, "Hey, could I have some of that, please?"

  18. That's exactly what my kids look like when I buy the Schwan's Push-Ups!

  19. Hooray for Smooch! She was a perfect star! I do see a rivalry developing with her understudy though. (Smooch, watch your back - and your Frosty Paws!)

As a former dog show diva I can tell you that the home made version is great. I used to get Dixie cups from the store to freeze them in but I'm betting that if you had an 'old fashioned' ice cube tray around that would work as well.

Not to push you further over the edge or anything but I also freeze low-sodium bouillon as a treat and ... you might not believe it but... I freeze carrot juice for the horses to have as a treat on a hot day.

  20. When she first started licking it, her tongue would linger just a bit before licking it again. So precious. I believe my dog would have just chomped the whole cup and not have enjoyed the pleasure of savoring the treat. Smooch rocks!

  21. My Granddog, Banjo, would love that!!!

  23. Every morning before I leave for work Creel (Greyhound) gets his Kong. Not a normal Kong mind you. A Kong prepared the night before with kibble and yogurt and love. I pour part of the breakfast kibble into the Kong and then a big blob of yogurt (he likes blueberry). Then another layer of kibble and yogurt...then another with the end result kind of looking like a red rubber ice cream cone with a blob of blueberry yogurt on the top. Freeze that sucker. Then give it to the fanatic Greyhound in the morning who doesn't even realize you have left for work shortly after. Good food, great workout for the teeth and jaws. Happy dog.

  24. She's such a sweetie, and eating nicely. No chewing through the card board there. And she got to keep the cup, too.

  25. OMG, Now I really have heard anything. I don't do the shopping and I'm not going to share with Dave about these frozen treats so I guess Delilah and Sugar are out of frozen luck.

Will check back to see how the "homemade" version goes. LOL

  26. that is great! and yes, only in America would we spend as much on our doggies frozen treats (and less of them) as on ours!

What kind of dog is Smooch? He reminds me a little of my pup.

  27. For my dog, I take a large container of plain yogurt, mix in some babyfood (she likes the fruit kind, but you can also use meat or veggie), spread into an ice tray and freeze. she gets a cube or 2 when it is hot outside:)

  28. This is the ultimate product endorsement!

  31. LOL that reminds me of a brief period when I had two dogs, an old West Highland White Terrier (Mac) and a young Springer Spaniel (Robbie).

Mac was very grumpy with poor Robbie, no matter how hard he tried to be friends and bring the old boy toys to play with. The only thing that would signal a truce was the sound of Ice Cream man's jingle in the street. Mam and I would take them to get a plain vanilla cone each and they'd sit very happily side by site eating their treat :).
