Starting the new year off right

New Year's Day ... 8:15 a.m. I looked out the window to see what the boys were doing. All four were huddled out of the wind against the big juniper in the corral, napping in the sun.

I had places to go, things to do, other donkeys to see, but I couldn't pass up the photo op. Would I be able to sneak into the corral for a few shots before they woke up?

So far so good.

Something other than me catches Hank's attention.

Should have known...
Deets never met a social gathering he didn't want to be in the middle of.

Taking his cue from the big guys, Deets backs up to the tree and catches a few rays.

Despite the 15-degree temperature and bone-chilling winds, there was no other place I'd rather have been on New Year's morning than right there with my herd. They all seemed so content...

...except for the one with the cold feet.

  1. Deets just cracks me up! Looks like he's having his say in that last picture.

Even with the cold/wind the boys all look happy napping in the sunshine.

  3. Everybody is starting the New Year off right. A sleep in the sun and a best buds huddle. Food and shelter and a nice caregiver is all that is required for la dolce vita.
    Best always,Sandra

  5. Accumulated snow is so uncommon here that we have to walk out in it in order for the dogs do walk out to go to do their business. They all have expressions like Deets in that last photo.

  7. They're really adorable sleeping like that. Deets is always in the thick of things though. I love the holding up my shaved paw in most of his pictures lately, I think he's reminding you sympathy is in order.

  8. You should get some MTG for poor Deets bald leg. It would grow the hair back real quick. I want your snow, just for a day or two so I can use my sleigh.

  9. I've been following your blog for a short time now, but I absolutely love it. It fills my heart with warmth when I "hear you talk" about your animals. I absolutely love the photos and I cannot wait for new posts from you.

  11. Nothin' sweeter than a horse or donkey's eye SHUT. You just don't them that way that often and it always is a ahhhhh moment.
Happy New Year to you and the critters!

  12. Aw, George looks like he's smiling... must be having happy dreams!
And Deets, well I think he just wanted his picture taken! Once he was with the herd he was looking right at you.

  13. Oh, they do look so content! My horse's pasture doesn't get much sun at this time of the year. The mares across the way get it all and they'll be sunbathing and he's hangin' in the shade! :)
I just love that Deets! Seriously, he needs his own blog, LOL!
    Happy New Year!

  14. That's so sweet all of them cuddled up like that. Deets is indeed a party animal. I'm thinkin' he should keep the shaved arm band. He could start a whole fashion craze.

  19. Deets and I have the same opinion about snow.

I prefer it from beside the fireplace, looking out the window. :)

I had no ideas burros could look so happy in their sleep!
