Scenes from the Mare Pen

The wild horses at the weekend's BLM auction were penned according to age and gender. The yearlings were the most curious and least fearful; the geldings were playful and goofy; and the mares stuck together in what could only be described as a chorus line. It's almost as if they were gossiping about the two-leggeds walking by.

I've never been much of a mare person, but I was totally captivated by these wild beauties. Part of me wanted to comb out their manes and polish them up, but the longer I examined their dreadlocks and watched them watch me through their peek-a-boo forelocks, the more I appreciated their no-maintenance style.








Of all the mares, this is the one who stole my heart...




...probably because she looks like Lyle's long-lost sister.
