I couldn't be happier with the way it turned out, especially since I didn't know what I was doing. The only snakeskin hatband I had for reference was worn by one of the cowboys at the social event of the season last fall. He had wrapped the entire hide around his hat and tied it in a big knot at the back...not exactly the look I was going for.
So I googled high and low for instructions. Sadly, there is no such site as howtomakearattlesnakehatband.com. I did come across an article from a 1991 issue of American Taxidermist Magazine for how to make a snakeskin belt and faked it from there.
Now that I've got this stylin' new hatband, I think I need a really nice new hat to do it justice. And I just happen to be going on a major out-of-town shopping adventure tomorrow. We'll see how much I can do to stimulate the economy.

ReplyDeleteCarolynn, I attached the hide to a canvas backing with Fabric-Tac, which is a kind of glue. There's a staple connecting the ends, and there are few sewn stitches behind the loops that hold the tail in.
