Skywatch Friday, with the Pin-Up Boys
Welcome, Skywatchers. Here's yet another photo of my burros with the New Mexico sky as a backdrop. What's special about this photo is that it is featured in the 2009 George and Alan Wall Calendar, available here, and all proceeds go to benefit the largest donkey rescue in the United States.

I love seeing the burro's. Do they actually serve a purpose on your farm? Are they ever working burro's or just pets?
ReplyDeleteJoanna, I adopted the burros originally to serve as companion animals for the horse who got left behind. Additionally, they do a very good job of keeping the coyotes away. But primarily, they keep me endlessly entertained.

ReplyDeletePardon my ignorance but is a burro the same as a donkey?
Winifred, the term "burro" is generally used for the wild variation of these animals that still roam the ranges of the western United States. "Donkey" generally refers to the domesticated variety. But they're both technically asses. I adopted George and Alan from the Bureau of Land Management's Wild Horse and Burro program.

ReplyDeleteWe have many donkeys here, they work hard in the fields and people look after them well. Young people, though, have 4 wheel drive pick up trucks and see the donkeys as old fashioned, pity really.

ReplyDeleteDonkeys are at the top of the list for me animal-wise (along with dogs and elephants of course!!!) so is great to see this post. We have donkey sanctuaries in Australia too and they do amazing work.
Did you take the incredible rainbow shot? I didn't know whether to call them donkeys or burros or what. The backlit shot is also gorgeous. Well done! And the desert has its own sunny beauty, does it not?
